The way he touches you, sometimes, when he thinks you’re asleep, tracing his fingertips along the edges of your oldest tattoo – a European dragon, curling up your arm and over your shoulder to rest its head over your heart – and you’ve never discussed it with him, simply had it appear soon after what might have been a proposal – it’s as if even now, he’s still trying to process and interpret the gesture. Because you did get it for him, of him, etching him onto your body with a permanence that a ring cannot provide. You had it done the Muggle way, so that it could not ever be removed entirely, cleanly.


Now, it’s twenty years faded onto your flesh, and the deliberate softness of his touch stirs the part of you that hopes he still feels something of the guilt and sorrow over what he did to you, leaving you when you knew he never could. That part of you hopes his pulse slows and his breath shudders when he thinks of how he placed the needles one-by-one in your heart, dripping with the ink from his letters that you never burned, marring you with a tattoo of his own design. You hope he regrets everything; you regret nothing. You love him.
